Ex-Boyfriend Accused In Fatal Workplace Shooting

WEBSTER, Mass. (WBZ) ― After more than an hour standoff in Berlin, police arrested a man suspected of shooting and killing his estranged girlfriend at the Action Auto Parts store in Webster.

Worcester District Attorney Joseph Early, Jr., said 38-year-old William Goddard will be charged with the murder of 30-year-old Kelly Brackley, of Auburn. The mother of five was gunned down Monday around 9:30 a.m. at her workplace. One of her coworkers, 25-year-old Yograj Shivoasani, of Providence, was shot in the upper torso at least once and is recovering at an area hospital.

Police said Goddard then fled the auto parts store and led police on a daylong search that ended in the rural central Massachusetts town of Berlin. Goddard was surrounded in a wooded area and was eventually arrested just before 5 p.m., police officials said.

He was then taken by ambulance to an area hospital.

Earlier in the day, police had found an SUV possibly connected with the shooting on Cherry Street in Spencer just after 10 a.m. Monday.

Early said Goddard switched vehicles at that point and headed to Worcester where he then received a ride from an unknown accomplice to Berlin. Police received a tip leading them to a home in Berlin where Goddard was hiding out, Early said. Once police arrived, Goddard fled on foot to a wooded area where he remained for about one hour before police shot him with bean bags and took him into custody.

During the standoff, Goddard shot a bullet from his firearm at a state police helicopter flying nearby, Early said.

Goddard faces one charge of first-degree murder.

Early said Goddard had restraining orders placed against him in the past but did not have one with Brackley.

Early called the killing a "tragic and needless loss of life," but commended law enforcement for safely bringing the suspect into custody.

The search for the suspect prompted Berlin Memorial School to be put into lockdown Monday afternoon as a precaution. The elementary school on South Street in Berlin is about 27 miles away from where the suspect's vehicle was found in Spencer.

The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, as well as a state police helicopter were involved in the investigation and search.

C.F.O. Mark Spears says they are "shocked and saddened" about the incident that happened Monday morning at Action Auto Parts.

Action Auto Parts employs less than 10 people and is owned by LKQ Corp. which is based in Chicago.

Action Auto Parts distributes after-market auto parts.
