Keller: Does The FBI Really Want To Catch Whitey?

Read Jon Keller's Political Blog

by Jon Keller
BOSTON (WBZ) ― It's been more than a decade since Boston mobster and FBI informant Whitey Bulger fled the city one step ahead of the police and in an interview Thursday with WBZ news, the new head of the local FBI office says finding Bulger remains a top agency priority.

Which raises a question for Jon Keller - is that really true?

Keller Says: "There are critics - including relatives of some of Bulger's many victims - who are convinced the feds would prefer not to find Bulger alive for fear of what he might say about their complicity in his crimes. But when we put that theory to the new special agent in charge of the Boston FBI [Thursday], we got back a scowl and a terse reply."

Warren Bamford wasn't around the Boston office when Whitey Bulger played the FBI for suckers.

"Anybody who knows anything about law enforcement understands that we need to bring this person in," said Bamford.

Howie Carr of WRKO radio is a leading Whitey expert and author of the best-selling book "The Brothers Bulger." he says law enforcement has every reason to want Bulger caught, but then again.

"You could make the argument that Whitey may have information that would embarrass the FBI, maybe not current agents, but historically, the Boston office. There are stories that he recorded all his conversations with FBI agents."

With the Oscar-winning movie "The Departed" drawing fresh attention to the Bulger/FBI scandal, it makes sense that a new generation of FBI leaders would want the endless questions about Whitey's whereabouts to stop.
