Bulger's Confidant Speaks Out

by Pauline Chiou
(CBS4) For the first time, we are learning new information about Whitey Bulger from his closest confidant.

Kevin Weeks --who's promoting a book -- sat down with ''60 minutes'' on Sunday and talked openly about the FBI's most wanted mobster.

"98 percent of his waking hours was dedicated to crime. Two percent to pleasure," said weeks as he described Bulger.

Kevin weeks knew mob boss Whitey Bulger like no one else. He was Bulger's right hand man for 20 years.

"How did he kill people?" 60 Minutes' Ed Bradley asked Weeks.

"He stabbed people, he beat people with bats, he shot people, strangled people and ran them over with cars," said Weeks.

Bulger has been on the run for 10 years and is number two on the FBI's most wanted list after Osama bin Laden. The mob boss has been charged with murder, extortion and racketeering.

One man he wanted to kill was Howie Carr -- The Boston Herald columnist and radio talk show host. Carr is also promoting his own book.

"I went after Whitey because I couldn't believe he was getting away with what he was doing and no one would write about it," said Carr.

Kevin Weeks went to Carr's home early one morning -- planning to shoot him with a rifle.

"He came at 7:15, 7:30 with a young girl who I assume was his daughter, so I had to pass," said Weeks. "I didn't want to kill him in front of his daughter."

Bulger vanished in 1994 after getting a tip that police were about to indict him. Weeks secretly met him five more times in different cities to pass on fake identification.

"Do you have any idea where he is?" asked Bradley.

"No not exactly. I believe he's in Europe somewhere and got trapped there after 9/11," Weeks responded.

Weeks is out of jail now and living in Southie. He believes whitey is living off $30 to $50 million he stashed away before vanishing.
