An Arlington Catholic high school football player accused of head-butting an opposing player during a game last month has been charged with assault and battery.
The criminal complaint was filed Friday against 17-year old James LaShoto.
During a game against Abington on September 19th, LaShoto allegedly head-butted a helmet-less Dan Curtin.
"I didn't know what was happening... he pushed my helmet off, the next thing I knew I was covered in blood," Curtin said shortly after the incident.
LaShoto is a team captain at Arlington Catholic and a member of the National Honor Society. He was suspended for two games for the incident.
"The LaShotos are not looking to say this wasn't wrong, they understand the boy overreacted and they apologized for the injury that occured to the Curtain boy, but anything that brings itself into the criminal realm really has to be far outside the sporting event itself," said Ron Martignetti, the LaShoto family attorney.
A clerk magistrate in Cambridge District Court in Medford issued the charge following a hearing attended by LaShoto and Curtin.
"The complaint was brought by the Arlington Police Department and that sets the stage for a jury to decide whether or not this was or was not a crime," said Frank McGee, the Curtain family attorney.
