Clerk Lucky To Be Alive After Robber's Gun Jams

AUBURN (WBZ) ― It happened just before closing Friday night at the One Stop Convenience store in Auburn. After two gunmen walk in to rob the place, one gets agitate when the clerk backs away from the register in fear, and pulls the trigger twice.

"It appears that his 9mm handgun jammed for whatever reason on those 2 separate occasions," said Auburn Police Chief Andrew Sluckis.

The owner of the store, Maqsood Taraq, says the clerk was shaken and is taking time off. "We all feel sorry about that, whatever happens. He's a lucky man. God saved him. It was a bit close. It was lucky for him."

"The clerk said he saw him pull the trigger and it didn't fire," said Sluckis. "And he made a motion that appears he tried to clear the chamber and re-fire... Usually, if you have one misfire, the next round will fire."

Sluckis says two rounds were recovered from the scene. The gunmen escaped with an undetermined amount of cash. The clerk escaped with his life. "He offered absolutely no resistance whatsoever and they still attempted to shoot him for no good reason and that's what makes these two individuals so dangerous."

Sluckis says if the gun had not jammed, this probably would have been a murder; and he's worried now that the two gunmen who escaped from this store could kill someone.

Auburn police say there are no other leads and no suspects in this case.

The Worcester County Counter Crime Task Force is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the armed robbers.
