Firefighters in Barnstable battled a large blaze at a local animal hospital Monday night.

Early reports from fire officials said most of the animals escaped safely from the third alarm fire that broke out at the Cape Cod Animal Hospital on Osterville Road in West Barnstable.

Firefighters were working to knock out the blaze late Monday.

The cause of the fire was unknown.

Fire officials said initial reports indicated an explosion happened at the hospital. National Grid was called to the scene to shut off gas in the area.
