Feds: Beetle In Worcester Longer Than Thought

Find Out If Your Neighborhood Is Affected By The Beetles

WORCESTER (AP) ― Federal agriculture officials say the invasive Asian Longhorned Beetles found this summer in Worcester-area trees may have been in the region for more than a decade.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture confirmed on Monday that a local pest control company has had one of the destructive black and white insects in its collection since 1997, four or five years before the time the department thinks the beetles arrived in Worcester.

That's bad news because it could mean the bugs have more of a head start in destroying area hardwoods.

Christine Markham, director of the USDA's national Asian longhorned beetle eradication program, said the origin of the beetle in the collection is uncertain. But company owners say it is was probably found locally.
