Beetle Regulation Area Expanded Near Worcester

WORCESTER (AP) ― Authorites say they are expanding a regulated area beyond Worcester to control the spread of tree-damaging Asian longhorned beetles.

The area is extended beyond Worcester to include Holden and West Boylston.

The pest was first discovered last week in Worcester's Kendrick Fields section.

Residents are urged not to remove wood, even firewood, from the area until the infected trees can be cut down after the first frost.

The beetles damage trees by burrowing into the wood to lay eggs. They are native to China are from 1 to 1 1/2 inches long. They have shiny black bodies with white spots and sweeping black and white antennae.

Infected trees can be reported on the city of Worcester's Web site.
