Beetle Quarantine Complicates Worcester Cleanup

WORCESTER (WBZ) ― Worcester is one of the hardest-hit communities in this ice storm, but some residents can't even get rid of the limbs that have fallen into their yards.

Residents inside the Asian Longhorned beetle quarantine area have been told not to cut or remove limbs, because it could actually spread an infestation. Residents who move debris from the quarantine area face fines.

Lieutenant Governor Tim Murray said in an emergency briefing Friday that clearing of limbs in that area should be left to professionals, because the larvae may still be alive. Worcester has not had the appropriate number of frosts to kill beetle larvae.

Gov. Deval Patrick said that if residents gather fallen debris, they should put it near the edge of the road for professional pick-up.

Government officials had planned to cut at least 4,500 trees to avoid a spread of the infestation. It's possible up to 20,000 trees would need to be removed.
