Truck Crash Jams Route 24 Traffic
AVON (WBZ) ―
An early morning truck crash created a traffic nightmare on Route 24 in Avon Thursday.
A truck carrying home heating fuel was cut off by a vehicle around 4:30 a.m. near Harrison Boulevard. The tanker hit the jersey barrier and landed on its side on the barrier, blocking a lane in each direction.
Two people walked away with minor injuries.
Rush hour traffic was backed up for four miles on the northbound side at one point.
The alternate routes, Route 28 and 138, were also jammed. The truck was removed several hours later.
It belongs to Diesel Direct of Canton. Company vice-president Bob Mazzoni told WBZ it was carrying about 400 gallons of home heating fuel at the time of the crash.
Brockton firefighters were able to plug the leak, but 75 gallons spilled out and some reached nearby catch basins, creating environmental concerns. The Department of Environmental Protection is still evaluating the situation.
Mazzoni said the truck has the capacity to carry 5,000 gallons, but it had just completed overnight deliveries and was about to leave the highway when it was cut off. The driver of the other vehicle has not been found.
The truck driver, identified only as Rudy, walked away with a cut on his head.
No charges have been filed at this point.
