Abandoned Baby Leaves Hospital, With Foster Family

NEWTON (WBZ) ― An infant who was abandoned on the front steps of an elderly man's Newton home when she was just a few hours old has been released from the hospital and placed with a foster family.

The baby was found last week by the man on Moulton Street.

A note was left with the baby that read, "Please take good care of this child."

According to police, the infant, who has been affectionately named "Leah," is a black female with curly hair. They have not released a picture of the little girl but hospital officials said she was "cute as a button" and was born healthy.

Police said they have received dozens of calls from people wishing to adopt the baby girl.

They have not said when Social Services will begin the adoption process.

Police believe she was left on a random door step. They have since been looking for the baby's mother who abandoned her near Newton-Wellesley Hospital, which is considered a drop-off location under the Safe Haven Law.

Under Massachusetts' Baby Safe Haven Law, parents can voluntarily place a newborn up to seven days old at a hospital, police department, manned fire station or a designated Baby Safe Haven facility.

Since the state's Safe Haven Law went in effect in 2004, six babies have been safely surrendered to hospitals, and more than 50 women have used the Safe Haven Hotline to give their babies up for adoption.  The hotline is 866-814-SAFE.
