Wellesley, Needham Bank Robber Is 'Intelligent'

By Jim Smith, WBZ Reporter
NEEDHAM (WBZ) ― Just over a week ago in Wellesley, a bank is held up and devices are left at the bank and a nearby supermarket.

Then, this past Friday, another bank is held up in Needham Center, and another suspicious object left at the counter.

In both cases, the suspect escapes, perhaps because of the added diversion of a bomb squad operation.

Northeastern University professor Jack Levin is a nationally known expert on crime. He says this suspect is probably very intelligent. "We're not talking about a very stupid person. He's someone who is very educated… He has a certain kind of street smart that is used by him to divert the attention away from money and towards public safety."

The FBI isn't saying if the device recovered in Needham was a real bomb, but they are saying the Wellesley robbery and the Needham holdup are probably connected.

Outside the bank in downtown Needham, the robbery bomb scare combo is still the talk of the town. "Well, I was scared because they said he escaped on foot and I needed to lock my door," said one resident.

There's no word if there is a connection with another bank robbery inĀ Holbrook last month. A bomb scare was called in to a nearby school minutes before that incident. And the getaway car was torched.

The FBI says bank robberies are actually down from last year, but only slightly. Recent events are quickly changing that statistic.
