A strong odor in a building on Beacon Hill prompted a chemical scare and evacuation Tuesday night. According to the Boston Fire Department, hazardous materials crews rushed to 21 Temple St., located behind the State House.
A woman, who neighbors say is a former chemist, barricaded herself inside her top floor apartment. Authorities say she poured some sort of chemical inside her apartment, then refused to leave.
"They smelled ammonia coming from her apartment for like the third time this week, so my neighbors got worried and they called the cops," said neighbor Tara LaChapelle. "There have been other problems (such as) noise disturbances."
The building was evacuated as a precaution.
SWAT teams arrested the woman after a standoff that lasted several hours overnight. They have yet to determine what chemicals caused the odor.
