Biker Injured, Bears Lose Mom After Crash In N.H.
MANCHESTER, N.H. (WBZ) ―
A motorcyclist is seriously injured and two little bears are without their mom after a tragic accident in Ossipee, New Hampshire on Tuesday.
According to fish and game officials, a man riding a motorcycle hit and killed a bear while her two cubs remained perched in a nearby pine tree.
The accident happened at the intersection of Route 16 and 25. The biker, John Fadone, 54, was taken to an area hospital, where he is being treated for unknown injuries.
When fish and game officers arrived on the scene, they spotted the mama bear's cubs and made several unsuccessful attempts to pluck them out of the tree. Officials tried to coax the cubs out of the tree until 10 p.m. Fish and game then set up traps overnight to catch them.
The bears -- believed to be only a few months old -- did manage to get down, but they did not go into the traps.
Officials are asking people in the Ossipee area to keep an eye out for the two bear cubs. According to experts, because the bears are so young, they could have a difficult time surviving without their mother.
If they are found, the cubs will be sent to Ben Kilham in Lyme, New Hampshire so he can help raise them and eventually release them back into the wild.
