Father And Son Charged In Big Dig Fraud Case

BOSTON (AP) ― A father and son have been indicted on fraud and larceny charges for allegedly rigging their company scales so they could overcharge the state for hauling away construction materials from the Big Dig, Attorney General Martha Coakley announced Friday.

James Roderick Sr., 61, and James Roderick Jr., 37, both of Marshfield, were subcontractors on the $14.798 billion Big Dig project. Under their contracts, the state paid by the ton for material hauled away from the construction site.

The indictments allege the Rodericks and their hauling companies rigged the weights of their scales and used inaccurate vehicle weights to bill the state for hauling away more material than was actually removed.

The indictment alleges the Rodericks defrauded the state of more than $250,000 between October 2004 and February 2007.

James Roderick Sr. was the owner of the now-defunct Y2Krush Corp., while his son is the owner of Durod Ltd. Both men were charged with two counts of larceny over $250, procurement fraud, presenting false claims and three counts of conspiracy.

Coakley said the indictments, issued late Thursday, followed an investigation by state police and the state Inspector General's Office that began in February 2006.

Michael Galvin, James Roderick Sr.'s attorney, did not immediately return a call seeking comment. James Roderick Jr.'s attorney, Robert Goldstein, was out of state Friday and could not immediately be reached.
