Police looking for a 5-year-old boy found a bloody mop in his father's Lynn apartment, but the district attorney says investigators still hope the boy is alive.
Essex County District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett told
The Daily Item of Lynn on Friday night that finding blood "is always a concern," but it's not yet known whose blood is on the mop.
Lynn police will be canvassing neighborhoods and distributing flyers Saturday.
Blodgett said a door-to-door search for Giovanni Gonzalez, including roadblocks, is also planned this weekend. Police say the goal of the roadblocks is to gather information from people who routinely travel through the area around Brightwood Terrace on a Saturday.
Police say they will work on establishing a timeline for the investigation.
The Item reported Friday investigators sought a warrant for a follow-up search of the home after the mop tested positive for blood. An affidavit also said the father had "an open cut and a bandaged finger," which he would not explain.
Ernesto Gonzalez has pleaded not guilty to child endangerment. He's held on $500,000 bail.
Prosecutors say the boy was dropped off at his father's home Aug. 15. When the boy's mother went to pick him up two days later, Gonzalez said their son wasn't there.
Investigators received a tip Thursday that led them to search
Flax Pond. It turned out to be a false alarm as police recovered the remains of an animal.
Their search has spanned through Lynn all the way to
Puerto Rico where Ernesto Gonzalez is from. Colon has also made pleas to his family for information about her son's whereabouts.
