Lab results are back from a bloody mop found in the home of a father whose 5-year-old son is missing, and police say they have "optimistic hopes" that the little boy is alive, the
Lynn Daily Item reported Wednesday night.
Essex County District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett told the Daily Item he can't reveal information about the test results because of the ongoing investigation, but he said police are hopeful.
Last week, investigators found the
bloody mop in Ernesto Gonzalez' Brightwood Terrace apartment during a search of the home. Blood was also found on a pine cleaner bottle. The newspaper said the father had "an open cut and a bandaged finger," which he would not explain.
Gonzalez' son, Giovanni, has been missing since Aug. 16 when his mother went to get him from a weekend visit with his father.
In addition to the bloody mop and bottle, investigators also seized boots and jeans with red and brown stains, lighter fluid, trash bags, two knives, children's toys, a bike and a bike helmet from Gonzalez' home.
Gonzalez has refused to cooperate with police and won't say what happened to Giovanni.
He is being held on $500,000 cash bail on charges of child endangerment.
Investigators received a tip last week that led them to search
Flax Pond. It turned out to be a false alarm as police recovered the remains of an animal.
On Monday,
investigators returned to Pine Grove Cemetery in hopes of finding clues.
Their search has spanned through Lynn all the way to
Puerto Rico where Ernesto Gonzalez is from. Giovanni's mother has also made pleas to his family for information about her son's whereabouts.
