The head of a Catholic group is upset that his alma mater is part of a marketing deal with
Victoria's Secret to sell clothing sporting the Catholic college's logo.
He says it shows "callous contempt for Catholic sensibilities."
But Ron Sanders found that B.C. students don't mind and some like the apparel.
"My roommates have 'em all," said Boston College nursing student Taylor Peyton.
She and her classmates are familiar with the Victoria's Secret line of apparel with college names including their's.
But they had not seen the story in the Boston Herald quoting B.C. alum C.J. Doyle, head of the
Catholic Action League, about the revenue-sharing deal between B.C. and Victoria's Secret.
"I think it's appalling. I think it's disgraceful. It's disgusting," said Doyle. "They see an opportunity to make a buck by striking a deal with a company that openly appeals to prurient interests."
A Boston College spokesman said, "The T-shirts, sweatpants, sweatshirts and other clothing items we have authorized are tasteful and, contrary to the
Herald report Thursday, do not include undergarments or bathing suits."
We went to the Victoria's Secret store on Newbury Street and found the apparel B.C. described in its statement. And the company's Web site does not include undergarments or bathing suits.
Michelle Hedberg, a B.C. student from Norfolk, Mass. said, "It's more of just like sweat pants, just lounging-around clothes, dorm wear."
Doyle said he had not seen the clothing but said, "This a company that sells lewd clothing. Why are they getting into a business arrangement with Victoria's Secret? It's a disgrace."
Second-year B.C. law student Doug Dealmo said, "I don't think that's necessarily anything against Catholic teaching. I don't think that's inherently sexual."
One senior said he thinks students here are thinking less about Victoria's Secret than the economy, the new administration and this nation's future.
The Universities of North Carolina and Minnesota have decided to end their deals with Victoria's Secret after the merchandise with their logos is sold-out. Our Calls to Victoria's Secret were not returned.
