The city of Boston and the union representing city firefighters have agreed to the hiring of licensed mechanics to maintain fire trucks.
The agreement comes nearly one year after Fire
Lt. Kevin Kelley was killed when the out-of-control fire truck he was on crashed into a building on Huntington Avenue.
Investigators determined that the truck's brakes failed.
The trucks have been maintained by a team of 10 firefighters who are not certified mechanics.
The Boston Globe reports that the agreement to hire certified mechanics was reached this week after the firefighters union dropped a demand that the new hires become members of the union.
In return, the city agreed to some concessions including the dismissal of disciplinary actions pending against some firefighters for sick leave abuse.
