When you think of
Boston Harbor Cruises, you think of whale watches and scenic harbor tours.
You don't think of rescue missions.
But that's what one of the company's ships, the Scarlett Isabella is about to embark on - a rescue mission to the Gulf of Mexico.
"She'll work with a small fleet of fishing boats and the fishing boats will deploy booms to make a containment field for surface oil," said BHC general manager Alison Nolan.
The Scarlett Isabella will be fitted with an oil tank and pump at a shipyard in the Gulf so she can pump the surface oil contained in the boom and transport it for safe disposal.
The crew is working on short notice and will have just a few days to prepare for the trip south.
"We've been taking inventory of supplies that were going to need - fuel, lube oil
we'll need a fair amount of food and water on board," said Captain Matt Patnaude of Beverly.
The four-member crew will work with other crews already in the Gulf.
They expect to be away from their families for long periods of time, but say they are happy to help.
"I'm very glad to go there to help out people," said crew member Frank Dimercurio.
"Hopefully we will get the job done."
Boston Harbor Cruises is a four-generation family-owned business.
They know what it's like to make a living off the water and how devastating this oil spill is to people dependent on the water for their livelihood.
"Our hearts certainly break for the Gulf (families)," said Nolan. "And particularly those individuals that make a living on the waterways."
The crew will leave on June 16th.
