Boston Jaywalkers Beware Of Rising Fines
BOSTON (WBZ) ―
Challenging Boston driving is blamed in part by pesky jaywalkers who ignore the stop signals and cross the street, trying to beat the traffic.
City Councilor Steve Murphy wants to crackdown on that practice after 14 pedestrians were killed in Boston last year.
Murphy said he wants to prevent more deaths by stepping up the fines for jaywalking from the current $1 to $100.
"We used to have a traffic division on the police department," Murphy said. "Their job was just to go out and handle that issue. Perhaps we should consider going back to that."
Locals say even if the $1 fine in the city was $100, they would still jaywalk.
Some experts say jaywalkers slow down traffic in Boston, which can mean more frustrated drivers.
While a $100 fine might sound like a lot of money, Edmonton, Canada fines people $250 for jaywalking.
