Off-Duty Security Officer Shot Patient; Being Called A Hero

BOSTON (WBZ) ― An off-duty security officer is being credited for helping save the life of a physician who was stabbed by a psychiatric patient inside a Massachusetts General Hospital building Tuesday afternoon.

The incident happened at 50 Staniford Street around 2 p.m.

PATIENT STABS DOCTOR

Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis, who arrived on the scene about 5 to 10 minutes after the attack, told reporters the patient was being seen by the doctor when he attacked her with a knife.

WBZ has learned the patient is Jay Carciero, 37, of Reading.

An armed, off-duty security officer was in the area at the time of the stabbing.

Davis said the officer pulled out his gun. "He produced a weapon and ordered the suspect to drop the knife. When he did not comply, the officer shot the suspect."

Carciero was brought to Mass. General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Davis said.

Police did not say how Carciero was able to obtain the knife used in the attack. Officials say the suspect had no criminal record to speak of.

SECURITY OFFICER A 'HERO'

The security officer is not employed at the hospital, but Mass. General's security director, Bonnie Michelman, called him heroic. "Everyone was happy he was there," she said.

The officer is at BPD Headquarters being questioned about the incident, as are many people in the office at the time of the shooting. The security officer has not been charged, police said.

Police told WBZ's Ron Sanders the situation was "under control" at about 2:25 p.m.

CONFUSION ENSUES

As the terrifying incident unfolded, many workers and patients in other offices of the building stayed in their locked offices until swarms of Boston and State Police had the scene under control. Vivian DiNapoli said an officer grabbed her by the arm, put her on an elevator and she was escorted out of the building. "It was so confusing. It was scary," she said.

DOCTOR A 'DEDICATED PROFESSIONAL'

The doctor, Astrid Desrosiers from Belmont, was seriously injured. Reportedly suffering from multiple stab wounds, she went into surgery Tuesday afternoon at Mass. General Hospital. She is now in stable condition.

"The hearts, thoughts and prayers of the Massachusetts General Hospital community tonight are with Astreid Desrosiers, MD, MPH and her family," MGH President Peter Slavin and Chief of MGH Psychiatry Jerry Rosenbaum said in a statement.

Slavin and Resenbaum said Desrosiers is a dedicated professional that has provided extraordinary care and treatment to patients. "Her commitment, compassion and courage are an inspiration to all of us. The entire MGH family is pulling together for her speedy recovery."

Desrosiers works as a psychiatrist at the Bipolar Clinic and Research Program, where the attack happened.

Besides her practice at MGH, she's affiliated with two other Boston-area clinics and has worked with the Haitian community in Boston, in particular assisting victims of domestic violence.

PATIENT LEAVES BEHIND KIDS, WIFE

Attorney James Perullo, who is acting as a spokesperson for Carciero's family said Jay was the father four children ranging in age from 3 to 12. Perullo tells WBZ Carciero leaves behind a grieving wife.

Davis said the incident stretched from an office into a hallway on the fifth floor of the building, which is home to the Depression Clinical and Research Program. That program is part of the Outpatient Department of Psychiatry at Mass General.

NOT FIRST SHOOTING AT MGH

This is the second deadly shooting at an MGH building in recent years.

Back in 2003, a secretary shot and killed a cardiologist before turning the gun on herself.

Investigators say the woman had been suffering from depression.

And just last week, a convicted sex offender was arrested on attempted rape charges.

Police say David Flavell attacked a woman in a bathroom right off the hospital lobby.

Flavell has been ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation.

The building where Tuesday's stabbing and shooting happened is located near Government Center and only a few blocks from Mass General's main building.
