Josh Beckett, Tim Wakefield, Jonathan Papelbon And Kevin Youkilis Also Make Team

NEW YORK (WBZ) ― The Red Sox are sending six players to the 2009 All-Star game in St Louis. Dustin Pedroia and Jason Bay were voted in by the fans while Tim Wakefield, Josh Beckett, Kevin Youkilis, and Jonathan Papelbon were selected as reserves.

Pedroia is hitting .285 with two home runs and 35 RBI while playing solid defense at second base. It's his second All-Star appearance.

Bay is hitting .259 with 19 home runs and 70 RBI. This will be his third All-Star appearance and his first with Boston.

Wakefield will be making his first ever All-Star appearance. The knuckleballer is 10-3 with a 4.30 ERA. At 42 years-old, Wakefield is the second oldest player in baseball history to make his first All-Star appearance. Satchell Paige was 45 when he made his first All-Star game in 1952.

Beckett is 9-3 with a 3.67 earned run average. This will be his second All-Star appearance and his second with the Red Sox.

Papelbon is 1-1 with a 1.75 ERA and 20 saves. This is Papelbon's fourth All-Star game.

Kevin Youkilis will be making his second All-star appearance. The first baseman is hitting .306 with 14 home runs and 47 RBI this season.

The six Sox All-Stars were announced in the top of the 3rd inning at Fenway Park and Wakefield got a thunderous ovation from the sell-out crowd on hand.

The other American League starters are Tampa Bay third baseman Evan Longoria, Minnesota catcher Joe Mauer, New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter and first baseman Mark Teixeira and outfielders Ichiro Suzuki of Seattle and Josh Hamilton of Texas.
