Sox Place Dice-K On Disabled List

BOSTON (WBZ) ― The Red Sox placed struggling pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with what they called a "weak shoulder."

Manager Terry Francona told reporters Matsuzaka will probably be out of action even longer than 15 days.

To fill his spot on the roster, the Sox promoted catcher Dusty Brown from Pawtucket.

Matsuzaka is 1-5 in eight starts this year with an 8.2 ERA. In his most recent start, Friday night against the Atlanta Braves, he gave up six runs and failed to get an out in the 5th inning.

On Saturday, the Red Sox said he would be removed from the rotation indefinitely and would under a medical exam. An MRI showed no structural damage but did indicate shoulder weakness, the team said.

This is Matsuzaka's second stint on the disabled list this season. He missed five weeks in April and May with a mild shoulder strain.

Matsuzaka has struggled since putching for his native Japan in the World Baseball Classic during spring training.
