A Weymouth police officer was struck and killed by a pick-up truck while working a traffic detail Monday morning.
The accident happened shortly after 9 a.m. at the corner of West and Front Streets.
Officer Michael Davey, 34, was on a traffic detail as a National Grid crew wrapped up work on a utility pole.
A pick-up truck driven by Ronald Gale, 79, of Weymouth, drove through a stop sign and hit a Toyota Camry on West Street, then continued on and pinned Davey to the National Grid truck, according to Norfolk District Attorney William Keating.
Gale has been cited with negligent motor vehicle homicide, speeding, failure to stop at a stop sign, and negligent operation.
According to the RMV, Gale had a clean driving record prior to his accident. His license has been revoked.
Davey leaves behind a wife and three children; ages 14, 9, and 6. He was an Iraq war veteran and the son of a retired police officer.
"This is a person who served his country in the military, serving in Iraq, and returned to serve his town as a police officer," District Attorney Keating said. "We have lost a guardian of our safety. That kind of person does not come along every day."
Town Councilor Mike Molisse called Davey a "fantastic guy" who was a big asset to the police department. He also said the intersection where Monday's accident happened was a dangerous one that had attracted the attention of town officials in the past.
Mayor Susan Kay said she spent much of the day consoling relatives of Davey and other members of the department.
