"I heard a screech, then I heard someone call 911," says Kate Hrunka. "I saw someone crying and this guy laying under that car."
Police say a man in his 30s was strapping his 1-year old baby into the car seat when he was struck on Cambridge Street in Brighton early Wednesday morning.
"There was blood everywhere it was really awful," says Hrunka. "He was lying on the ground unconscious. They were checking his pulse but it didn't look good."
The victim was taken to Mass General Hospital with massive head trauma. He's listed in critical condition. The child was not injured.
The driver is Kathy Burgin August.
Police say she tried to flee the scene after she struck the man. She didn't get far as several furious witnesses blocked her car and starting smashing her front windshield.
Dana Roth is a journalist who reports on accidents like this all the time, just not ones that happen in front of her home.
"It happens in the morning, noon and night and no matter how many times you see them you never get immune to it its really terrible thing. They need to do something around here," says Roth.
Kathy Burgin August is charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in personal injury.
She is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday at Brighton District Court.
