A Watertown woman accused in a hit and run accident in Brighton on Wednesday has a history of recent crashes. Cathy Bergin-August, 47, was arraigned in Brighton District Court on Thursday for her most recent accident.
Bergin-August is accused of running over a father who was standing beside his car on Cambridge Street, buckling his baby into a car seat. According to police, she tried to leave the scene of Wednesday morning's crash, but witnesses jumped in front of her vehicle and stopped her.
"I heard a screech, then I heard someone call 911," witness Kate Hrunka told WBZ on Wednesday. "I saw someone crying and this guy laying under that car."
"There was blood everywhere it was really awful," said Hrunka. "He was lying on the ground unconscious. They were checking his pulse but it didn't look good."
The man who was run over Wednesday has been identified as Fredy Eduardo Latin Zepeda. When EMTs arrived, he was unconscious. We are told he suffered life-threatening head injuries and underwent brain surgery at Mass General Hospital.
His one-year-old son was not injured.
The Registry of Motor Vehicles has pulled Bergin-August's license, deeming her an "immediate threat." According to driving records obtained by WBZ, she has been found at least partially responsible for five other accidents in the Boston area since 2004.
According to police reports, the prescription drug Clonazepam was found in Bergin-August's car. A warning on the prescription bottle states the medicine may cause drowsiness. Bergin-August's attorney, J.W. Carney Jr., confirmed his client is prescribed the medication to help treat Tourette's Syndrome. There is no indication whether she had Clonazepam in her system at the time of the accident.
Bergin-August was charged with leaving the scene of an accident and negligent operation for Wednesday's accident. She was arraigned Thursday, with bail set at $1,000 and was ordered to surrender her driver's license.
