Father Struck By Hit & Run Driver Dies

BRIGHTON (WBZ) ― A Brighton father who was run over by an alleged hit and run driver in Brighton earlier this week, has died of his injuries. Fredy Eduardo Latin Zepeda suffered massive head injuries in Wednesday's accident.

Zepeda had just buckled his one year old son into his car seat and was standing outside the driver's side of the car when witnesses say a woman ran him over and then tried to leave the scene.

Zepeda's wife, Milvia, was sitting in the front seat. She told WBZ, "He closed his door and in the blink of an eye a car hit him right away."

Cathy Bergin-August of Watertown was charged Thursday with negligent driving and leaving the scene of an accident. Prosecutors say she will likely face more serious charges now that Zepeda has died.

Family members tell WBZ that Fredy Zepeda was a devoted father of two from Guatemala. "He was an excellent father; very responsible family man," Milvia said. "Very hardworking, honest, honorable father. A loving husband and wanted to live for his family."

Zepeda worked construction and odd jobs, and sent money home to family members in Central America.

Zepeda's nephew John Puerta described his uncle as a role model. "He was always at my house, always giving me good advice. 'Do good in school,' saying come to the gym with him, keep myself active. Stay off the streets, stay off drugs. He was always an example."

Following Wednesday's crash the Registry of Motor Vehicles pulled Bergin-August's license, deeming her an "immediate threat." According to driving records obtained by WBZ, she has been found at least partially responsible for five other accidents in the Boston area since 2004.

In court Thursday her bail was set at $1,000, though the judge indicated that bail would likely rise if Zepeda died and charges were upgraded.
