Cape Cod Couple Spots Rare Hummingbird

DENNIS (WBZ) ― A Dennis couple made a rare find last week. Ron and Marji Murphy spotted a male Broad-billed Hummingbird – a species that is usually found in Arizona and Mexico, according to newspaper reports.

The Cape Cod Times said the bird was fist spotted last week snacking at the Murphy's hummingbird feeder. Ron and Marji tell the paper they have seen the rare hummingbird infrequently over the past few days.

The male Broad-billed Hummingbird has a long red bill, a blue throat and a green chest. This hummingbird lives in semi-desert conditions, open deciduous forest, arid scrub and other open situations in arid habitats.

The Murphy's neighbors, who are avid birdwatchers, were able to snap a shot of the rare bird as well as capture him on video, which they later posted on YouTube.

This is the first time this hummingbird has been spotted in Massachusetts and only the second time it has been seen in New England, the Boston Globe reports.
