Brockton police say a 12-year-old girl was the victim of an attempted abduction Tuesday morning.
She was walking to West Middle School when a stranger pulled up alongside her in a car.
"What she described as a black BMW, being operated by a black male with cornrows, pulled up. He started a conversation and said 'I like the way you're walking'," Lt. John Crowley explained to WBZ.
Crowley says the man then got out of the car and tried to snatch the girl's backpack.
She pulled away, ran up a nearby driveway and knocked on the door. The neighbor called police.
Since then, police have stepped up patrols around the area at the start and end of school days.
The school district also notified 10,000 parents by sending letters and using an automated telephone message.
In the letter, Superintendent Matthew Malone wrote :
"Thankfully, the student's quick thinking helped her to evade the attempted abductor and summon help from a neighbor. Still we are very concerned about safety and feel it is our duty to let you and your student know what caution must always be used."
Parents who live near the scene say they've reminded their kids to be vigilant about strangers.
"I told them not to be friendly with people, they don't know," said Pierre Erilus, a parent of three on Pearl Street.
"Anything could happen, you never know."
Police say they believe this was an isolated incident.
