Dad Leaves Infant On Side Of Road During Chase
BROCKTON (WBZ) ―
Even veteran police officers couldn't believe it -- thieves, who used their own newborn daughter to hide their pilfered goods. "It's kind of rare," said Brockton police Lt. John Crowley. "We don't see someone put a child in danger too often."
Police say it was Tuesday morning when 25-year-old Jose Cepeda-Irizarry and his wife, Leyda Lopez, walked into the Wal-Mart on Oak Street with their 2-month-old daughter in a stroller.
Investigators say the store's security cameras recorded the pair taking hi-def computer screens out of the boxes, then storing them under the baby.
When the couple left the store, security personnel approached, and Cepeda-Irizarry pulled a knife, and tried to slash one of the security officers. "The males produced a knife, and swung two times at the officer, narrowly missing his throat," said Lt. John Crowley.
Then, Cepeda-Irizarry started pushing the stroller, with his infant inside, as fast as he could across Oak Street.
Once on the sidewalk, video shows the young father abandoning his child, but grabbing the hi-def TV screens, and running off.
The couple was quickly apprehended by Brockton police.
Cepeda-Irizarry has been charged with larceny, attempted murder, and child endangerment.
The couple's child is now in state custody.
