Brockton Cuts 101 City Jobs
BROCKTON (WBZ) ―
The city of Brockton announced Friday that it will cut 101 positions to cope with a $2.5 million loss of city funds for 2009.
Of those cuts, 76 positions affect active personnel. The rest are vacant or unfilled positions that have been eliminated. The cuts include 20 firefighter and 10 police officer positions.
Mayor James Harrington said the city did all it could to reduce the number of job cuts. Harrington implemented a hiring freeze and proposed a salary freeze for the upcoming budget cycle.
He also implemented a 40 percent increase to all non-union employee health insurance contribution rates.
All city unions have been notified of the cuts and notices will be mailed to all employees affected by the decision over the next few days.
Cities and towns all over Massachusetts have been plagued with budget cuts and deficits in an ailing economy.
