An elderly home was evacuated after a massive fire broke out at a nearby building in Brookline early Sunday morning.
According to the Brookline Fire Department, the four-alarm blaze broke out at a vacant building on Sewall Ave.
One hundred twenty residents of a nearby elderly and disabled public housing complex were taken to a public school in the area to escape the heavy smoke spewing from the building. All the residents were allowed to return home at 8 a.m.
A condominium complex near the vacant building was also evacuated. None of the residents were injured.
The vacant building was so damaged by the fire, the structure ended up collapsing, fire officials said.
Fire departments from Boston, Cambridge, Somerville and Newton helped the Brookline fire department with the blaze. Three firefighters from Brookline sustained minor injuries and were transported to a local hospital for treatment.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
