Investigators Search For Cause Of Brookline Fire

BROOKLINE (WBZ) ― Investigators are trying to figure out if someone set a fire that destroyed a vacant Victorian home in Brookline over the weekend.

The home was being renovated at the time. The fire broke out early Sunday morning and quickly went to four alarms.

The fire destroyed the home, leaving a pile of charred rubble behind on Sewall Avenue. The blaze also caused significant damage to the building next door.

Witnesses said the house went up in no time.

"When my wife woke up, that house was completely engulfed. I mean it was very very gone," said Marc Erickson who lives nearby.

120 residents of a nearby elderly and disabled public housing complex were taken to a public school in the area to escape the heavy smoke spewing from the building. Everyone was allowed to return home by 8 a.m.

A condominium complex near the vacant building was also evacuated. None of the residents were injured.

Fire departments from Boston, Cambridge, Somerville and Newton helped the Brookline fire department with the blaze. Three firefighters from Brookline sustained minor injuries and were transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
