Mass. Hit By Hundreds Of Brush Fires

GLOUCESTER, Mass. (AP) ― Fire officials around Massachusetts are hoping some rain forecast for later in the weekend might help stem a rash of brush fires in the state.

The danger prompted Gloucester Mayor Carolyn Kirk to issue an emergency declaration putting all public woods in the town off limits until further notice.

Hundreds of brush fires have been reported in Massachusetts over the last week or so -- 120 on Thursday alone.

The National Weather Service says only 1.45 inches of rain have been recorded in Boston in April, about one inch less than normal for the month. Low humidity levels and strong winds have also helped fuel brush fires.

Two teenage boys were arrested Thursday in Harwich and accused of intentionally setting two large brush fires in the Bells Neck Conservation Area. Police do not believe the 14- and 15-year-olds are linked to any of the dozens of other brush fires that have occurred on Cape Cod over the past month.
