House Approves Emergency Budget Measures
BOSTON (AP) ―
The Massachusetts House has approved and sent to the Senate a package of emergency measures designed to ease a looming fiscal crisis.
Some of the measures were proposed by Gov. Deval Patrick
earlier this month when he announced he would eliminate up to 1,000 jobs and order state agencies to make more than $1 billion in cuts and spending controls.
The Legislature was meeting Thursday in an informal session, meaning opposition from a single member could scuttle a vote.
House Speaker Salvatore DiMasi, in a letter sent to House members late Wednesday, said the measures include changes to the state's pension funding schedule and transferring up to $200 million from the state's rainy day fund.
