Seasonal Thieves Lurk On Cape Cod

YARMOUTH (WBZ) ― A warning to those launching their summer season on the Cape this weekend: police are investigating a ring of seasonal thieves.

Officers in Yarmouth spent the entire weekend taking in reports from more than 50 people who have had items stolen from their parked cars.

"About 98 percent of them were unlocked. People aren't thinking about security when they're on vacation, and they're leaving valuable things in their vehicles," said Sgt. Jerry Britt.

Victims have reported stolen iPods, GPS units, cell phones, i-Phones, and even a handicapped placard among other things.

One victim, John Digeronimo, lost his laptop when his car was broken into.

"I actually live on that thing," he said. "All my billing.  All my invoices."

Police tell WBZ they believe it's an organized ring. The incidents began Saturday with reports with still coming in on Monday.

"It's the first big summer weekend of the season," said Detective Steve Renzi. "They know the Cape is going to be deluged with visitors, so what a perfect time to come out."

The thieves are targeting cars on streets that run off the main road leading to Seagull Beach in Yarmouth. Police have stepped up patrols in that area.
