Four people are under arrest in connection with a brazen crime spree on the Cape. Police say the group broke into dozens vehicles over the holiday weekend in West Yarmouth.
The suspects stole iPods, iPhones, GPS units, cell phones, handicapped placards, even a police badge from another state, according to investigators.
The break in the case came when a police officer noticed a run-down car in a well-kept neighborhood with four people inside. "We were basically going out, looking for these types of vehicles looking for things that were out of place," said Officer Scott Lundegren.
Police say that car sped off when the driver saw the officer's cruiser. The car was eventually pulled over and investigators say it was filled with stolen property.
The driver and passenger took off, but were later caught by police.
Richard Hagerty, Arpad Peter Voros Jr., Ryan Furtado and Nicholas were all placed under arrest.
Officials say the suspects are known to police. "This will be the last of it for these particular individuals, because at this point, I think we've got probably the most serious charges pending against them all," said Detective Steve Renzi.
Officers in Yarmouth spent the entire weekend taking in reports from more than 50 people who had items swiped from their parked cars. "About 98 percent of them were unlocked. People aren't thinking about security when they're on vacation, and they're leaving valuable things in their vehicles," Sgt. Jerry Britt told WBZ.
The thieves targeted cars on streets that run off the main road leading to Seagull Beach.
Police started getting calls Friday and by the end of the weekend, they had received dozens of complaints. "It's the first big summer weekend of the season," Renzi said. "They know the Cape is going to be deluged with visitors, so what a perfect time to come out."
Anyone with additional information about the thefts should call Yarmouth Police at 508-775-0445 extension 118.
