Maybe the thief should have listened to the Sunday sermon. Instead, someone broke the lock on the minister's office door at the Wollaston Congregational Church in Quincy Oct. 5.
Just as Rev. Mary Louis Gifford was on the pulpit speaking about the Ten Commandments, the criminal was breaking the eighth one, "Thou Shalt not Steal."
After the service, Gifford noticed the car keys were missing from her desk.
When she looked outside, she saw someone had stolen her 2005 Pontiac Vibe.
To make matters worse, her purse was in the car. "Today I've had to be on the phone with all my credit card companies. I was at the bank at 8 this morning," says Gifford.
And worst of all, she says she had a traveling communion set in the car, which had great sentimental value to her.
Now the Church, which has a sign out front saying, "Welcome All," has to start locking its doors on Sunday. "One of our slogans is, 'No matter where you are on life's journey, you are welcome here,' and so to then have to lock your doors on Sunday morning...it's sad," says Gifford.
