Car Graveyard Discovered In Merrimack River

At Least 15 Cars Pulled From River

DRACUT, Mass. (WBZ) ― State police are investigating how many of at least 15 cars found in the Merrimack River were stolen, in what police say is a large operation.

The underwater car graveyard was discovered last Saturday, and since then police have pulled 15 rusting cars out of the water. All of the cars were found in a 3-mile span of the river along Route 110 near the town of Dracut.

Officials said at least 5 more cars are still in the river but won't be pulled out until next week due to the waters beginning to rise again.

The cars were taken to an impound lot in Lawrence where police are checking each one to determine if they were reported stolen.

The cars date back to the 70s, and it is unknown how long they have been in the waters.

Because the water is about nine feet lower than usual, residents spotted some of the cars and alerted authorities.

Some of the cars have plates but others don't, making it a tricky process to identify owners and insurance companies.

Police are also investigating if the cars may be attached to any other crimes.
