Mashpee Tribe Leader Glenn Marshall Resigns
BOSTON (WBZ) ―
The chairman of the tribe seeking to build a casino in
Massachusetts offered his resignation on Monday, according to Greg D'Agostino, a spokesman for the tribe.
Glenn Marshall met with the council and offered to resign effective in 30 days, but the council voted nine-to-one to make his resignation effective immediately.
D'Agostino said vice chairman
Shawn Hendricks will now become tribal chairman.
Marshall's resignation comes after a published report revealed he was a convicted rapist and had lied to Congress about his military service during Vietnam.
On Friday, Marshall announced he would be stepping down from his daily duties and issued a statement acknowledging he let misstatements about his service stand. The statement said nothing about the rape conviction. He said he was giving up day-to-day duties to "deal with the mental and physical issues I'm facing."
Marshall represented the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe trying to build a $1 billion casino in Middleboro.
According to Hendricks, they are planning forge ahead. They will be filing a petition with the federal government on Thursday to take more than 500 acres of land in Middleboro and 100 acres in a Mashpee trust.
