Governor's Office Defends Casino Proposal

BOSTON (AP) ― The Patrick administration says its proposal to bring casinos to Massachusetts would also provide money to fight gambling addiction.

Health and Human Services Secretary JudyAnn Bigby told lawmakers the measure would create a trust fund for public health problems associated with gambling.

The bill calls for setting aside 2.5 percent of the state's gross revenue from casino gambling for the fund.

Bigby told a legislative panel at the Statehouse that the money would also pay for drug and alcohol treatment programs, in addition to gambling addiction problems.

Representative Daniel Bosley, an outspoken opponent of casinos, said after Bigby's testimony that he heard nothing at the hearing that would change his opinion.

The hearing was called to gather information on gambling addiction associated with casinos.
