Feds Step In To Help Create New Cell Phone Laws
BOSTON (WBZ) ―
"I know it's dangerous, but I use my cell phone all the time while I'm driving," said a woman in Easton today.
But now the federal government is taking steps to ban distractions while driving.
Today on Capitol Hill, lawmakers heard testimony about the dangers of driving while texting or using cell phones.
Immediately after the hearings, President Obama issued an executive order, banning all government workers from driving and texting, or using cell phones.
Last year, nearly 5,000 people died in crashes that were associated with electronic distractions, and almost 500,000 were injured. Today, lawmakers initially targeted truckers and inter-state bus drivers, suggesting a ban on texting will come soon.
Here in Massachusetts, there are 16 bills pending on Beacon Hill that would limit driving and electronic devices.
