Moms Fight School Store's Religious Item Ban
CHELMSFORD (WBZ) ―
For almost two decades, the Byam School in Chelmsford has operated a small gift store in early December -- everything under $1.
It's a way of raising money, but there's one stipulation to donating items: nothing religious. "They're banning Christmas gifts, Chanukah items, even Kwanza. I don't think diversity means excluding views," says Katheryn McMillan, a mother of one student at the elementary school.
"What are the kids buying gifts for in December, if not one of the Holidays?" says McMillan.
But the school superintendent, Dr. Don Yeoman, says they've been doing it this way for at least 19 years, just to avoid any controversy. "They've taken the conservative approach," says Yeoman. "Kind of like separation of church and state."
But at least one other mom asks, what is December without holiday traditions? "It's not about us (adults)," says Kathy Cullen. "We should embrace, and be proud of all our traditions."
