Revere Boy Killed By MBTA Train
REVERE (WBZ) ―
A boy was hit and killed by an MBTA commuter train in Revere Sunday afternoon.
Police say Stephen Garbarino, 5, was riding his bike when he was hit by a northbound train near Oak Island Road.
Garbarino was with his mother, older brother, and a friend when he went around the gates and tried to cross the tracks just before 2 p.m.
Witnesses say he apparently thought it was safe because a train had already passed through. He wasn't aware that another train was coming from the other direction.
"They saw the train go by, the kid walked out after it, another train came this way," said Mike Bradway, a witness. "He didn't see it coming."
According to the MBTA, the warning systems were working properly. The gates were down and the lights were flashing as the trains approached. They say the speed of the train was not a factor in the accident.
The MBTA says its trains run through that area at 60 miles per hour, and it says that is not too fast.
"I'm just heartbroken," said family friend Ken Ralphs. "I can't imagine how any parent would feel, looking for one of their children. I'd be going out of my mind if anything like that ever happened to him."
"The death of a child so young is always a tragedy," said Suffolk District Attorney Dan Conley. "His family is in our thoughts and prayers."
"He was too young to die," said Garbarino's friend, 7-year-old Lucien DiMarzio.
