Man Charged In Thefts From Winthrop Church
WINTHROP (WBZ) ―
Father Tom DiLorenzo has learned a very tough lesson. You can't always trust everyone when it comes to money.
Father Tom hired a man he thought could help them restore the bricks on the side of the Holy Rosary Church in Winthrop. Instead, he says that man took the church and him, for thousands of dollars.
"You know what? I believed him. I believed every word he said" says Father Tom.
That man is Michael Bocchino, a brick layer from East Boston. Father Tom and the District Attorney say Bocchino took thousands for work he never finished at the church. In fact, the scaffolding is still on the side of the church where it has been since 2008.
Father Tom says he paid Bocchino 12 to 16 thousand dollars for the work. But that's not all.
Bocchino is accused of stealing blank checks and stealing $20 thousand in funds from the church. And Father Tom says he gave Bocchino two thousand dollars of his own money as well.
"I'll be more cautious. I won't do that again. I still believe you have to trust people but don't be stupid" says Father Tom.
Bocchino's brother tells WBZ there is more to the story but won't go any further.
We tried to speak with Bocchino at his East Boston home and his brother-in-law told us he was not there.
As for Father Tom, he just wants the church's money back and he plans to put a lien on Bocchino's home.
There is some good news; someone has donated their time to finish the brick work at the church at no cost.
