Four people rescued from their sinking boat in the Atlantic Ocean arrived safe on Cape Cod Thursday evening.
The group was sailing from Florida to New York when something hit their 38-foot sailboat early Tuesday morning, about 200 miles off the coast of Charleston, South Carolina.
The boat instantly began taking on water, so the group activated their emergency beacon to signal for help.
Fortunately, the Coast Guard cutter Reliance from Kittery, Maine was just six miles away. By the time they arrived the sailboat's cabin had filled with four feet of water, and the vessel's pumps had lost power and were no longer pumping the water off the boat.
"I was already afraid, so the idea we might be rescued was really a relief because it was like, 'OK, I'm ready to get out of these high waves,'" Berlinda Cole told WBZ.
The crew from the Reliance pulled the sailors off the sinking vessel safely. All four are in good condition. The cutter brought the sailors north, where they were transferred to a 47-foot motor lifeboat from Station Cape Cod Canal Thursday evening.
Cole started dancing once she put her feet on solid ground.
"It feels great," she said. "My legs feel like I'm still on the water, but my heart knows I'm not."
