Couple Struck By Lightning; Husband Killed
HAVERHILL (WBZ) ―
A husband and wife were struck by lightning Friday afternoon while the two were out for a walk on a trail in Haverhill.
The husband was killed by the strike in the chest around 2:35 p.m. during a fast-moving storm.
A bicyclist came upon the couple along the trail, and the wife was able to ask him to call 911, Haverhill police Sgt. Robert Pistone said.
Pistone said the man was unconscious when crews arrived. Emergency crews had to use 4-wheel drive vehicles to get to the couple.
Both were rushed to Merrimack Valley Hospital where the 47-year-old man was pronounced dead.
The woman's condition is unknown. Names have not been released.
In a bizarre coincidence, a couple walking along the beach in Scituate Harbor Friday night was also hit by lightning. The man was injured and was taken to South Shore Hospital. He was conscious and his wife is also expected to be OK.
