Traffic Stop Leads To Crack Bust
BRAINTREE (WBZ) ―
What started out as a traffic stop in Braintree turned into a surprise crack bust by State Police.
It began when Trooper Paul Conneely pulled a car over on Granite Avenue early Saturday.
He said the driver -- Fran Mathieu, 24, of Randolph -- was carrying $15,000 worth of crack cocaine and $1,700 in cash.
The suspect tried to hide the dope in the back seat of his cruiser, but Conneely said police are trained to look there and he found it.
"This is what we call a complete 'cold' stop," Conneely said. "To be honest with you, I'm just out there, I had no idea what I had. A car in front of me crosses over the yellow double line, I made the stop and one thing led to another."
Prospective buyers were calling Mathieu's cell phone as he was being arrested, Conneely said.
Police also searched Mathieu's room at the Candlewood Suites hotel in Braintree.
They say that's where he was doing business, preparing his product for sale.
