David Ortiz has been one of the bright spots for the Red Sox in the ALCS so far. But his right knee is hurting him so badly he told one reporter he can't wait for the season to end.
Ortiz told ESPNDeportes.com Monday: "This is no time for crying. But I really want this season to be over to undergo knee surgery."
The knee has bothered Ortiz all season, especially when it comes to his power. A year after hitting a team-record 54 home runs, his total for 2007 dropped to 35.
Despite the problem, he raised his batting average from .287 in 2006 to .332 this season.
He was given a cortisone shot to get through the playoffs.
Ortiz told ESPNDeportes.com that the situation got significantly worse after Saturday's 11-inning marathon loss at Fenway Park.
"My right knee was so swollen that I feared I wouldn't play again for the rest of the series."
"I spent Sunday in bed, taking medications. It looked really bad"
Ortiz told WBZ's Dan Roche after Monday night's game that his knee improved a bit after the day off Sunday.
"I think I ran too much on Saturday and... right after the game... I swelled up a little bit. but it's o.k. now."
